Vivien Thompson

Vivien is a Senior Associate in Gowling WLG's contentious construction team. She advises clients on high-value disputes arising out of major construction and engineering projects, including arbitration and mediation.

She has over two decades of experience of commercial and construction disputes and has developed wide-ranging legal experience, having advised numerous private sector clients, including contractors, sub-contractors, employers, developers and consultants.

Vivien's focus is on building and fire safety disputes and she has been instructed on a number of high value, multi-jurisdictional, cladding and fire safety cases and other construction related disputes.

She is a member of the Society of Construction Law and the Adjudication Society.


  • Acting for a large international manufacturing company on a high-value, Technology and Construction Court dispute, involving unpaid invoices. Defending a counterclaim for defects and delays. Handling multiple interim applications.
  • Advising clients on claims for breach of contract, negligence and misrepresentation, in respect of cavity wall insulation damage to property.
  • Key role played in £300 million LCIA arbitration proceedings, spanning across multiple jurisdictions, arising out of defects in wind turbines for an offshore wind farm.
  • Representing high-net worth clients, in relation to breach of contract disputes against defendants based in multiple jurisdictions, including Italy, France, Canada, California, New York and France.
