We have extensive experience of helping developers and higher education clients run large scale development projects. Our immersion in this sector ensures that we provide only advice and support that is directly relevant to you and your business.

We advise clients on every aspect from the initial planning and site acquisition, development, management and construction, through to on-going asset management. Specialists such as those in our dispute resolution, tax and structuring, health and safety and human resources teams can also be drawn on as and when needed to help you. Our role encompasses advice on the robustness of arguments advanced by local education authorities for education provision, collaborating with relevant consultants and negotiating the appropriate provision.


Experience has included acting for Development Securities on its joint venture with Accrue Capital in relation to the acquisition of Ladybarn House, Manchester (University of Manchester) including full corporate and real estate due diligence. The project included 100 student bedrooms, four associated retail units, and a refurbishment and associated management project.

We advised private equity group Gravis Capital Partners LLP on the launch and £70 million initial public offering of GCP Student Living plc. This was the first REIT to be listed on the Specialist Fund Market of the London Stock Exchange. It used the net proceeds to part-finance the acquisition of a c.£93 million fully occupied student residential block comprising 588 studios opposite Queen Mary's University in London.

We advised on the management of Sanctuary's portfolio of London student accommodation where it has nominations agreements with five universities.

We are acting for Birmingham City University on its acquisition and development of a 37,000 square metre site in Eastside where it will build a new £130 million campus. Together with existing locations, the campus will have more than 50,000 square metres of facilities and be home to around 10,000 students. We have also acted for the university on the sale and leaseback of two blocks of student accommodation with associated management agreements.

Our real estate finance group also has significant experience acting for lenders and borrowers on the acquisition and development financing of campus, out-of-town and city student accommodation schemes, including purpose-built properties and portfolios, and on associated asset management and nominations agreements.
