Jonathan Brufal

Jonathan Brufal helps clients to deliver complex high value energy and infrastructure projects - both domestically and internationally.

With experience across many different jurisdictions and sectors, acting for both public and private sector organisations, Jonathan's clients benefit from his all round perspective of different parties' interests and priorities.

He has an acute awareness of the need to be pragmatic and commercial to deliver successful projects in emerging markets. He also has a deep understanding of the range of funding models used around the world, and a comprehensive knowledge of international PPP models and market risk positions.

Jonathan is head of the firm's Africa group and has over 15 years' experience working in Africa (in more than 15 countries), as well as throughout the Middle East.

Jonathan relishes the challenge of helping to get off the ground big, complex and hugely important energy and infrastructure projects in sometimes challenging environments across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Jonathan has particular experience in the power and utilities, mining and metals, infrastructure and PPP sectors; experience he enjoys putting to good use for the benefit of his clients, which include sponsors, borrowers, banks and governments.

Jonathan was recognised in 2017's prestigious Acritas Stars database as a 'star lawyer'.

Highlights

Jonathan led the team advising the Government of Bahrain on the extremely challenging Muharraq Wastewater PPP project. This was the first wastewater PPP offered for tender to the private sector in Bahrain, involving the construction of a treatment plant and the creation of a significant conveyance network, as well as providing for significant future expansion.

The model followed earlier Bahraini power deals, but there were some significant twists – and some major practical challenges. The project also had to weather both the global financial crisis and a volatile political environment. Joanthan was therefore thrilled when it was awarded PFI Middle East Infrastructure deal of the Year 2011.

Another ground breaking deal was advising AGES on the first Solar PV project to reach commercial close in Sierra Leone. A challenging project for all involved due to the Ebola outbreak, Jonathan looks forward to continuing to advise AGES as they take the project through construction to commercial operation.

Clients

Energy and infrastructure developers, equity investors and debt providers, governments procuring projects in the energy, water, infrastructure sectors and mining developers and their lenders.
