For many UK automotive suppliers, the past decade has been characterised by constant change. Brexit, supply chain disruption, rising costs, geopolitical uncertainty and the shift to electrification have all required businesses to adapt and innovate.
Against that backdrop, the defence sector is increasingly being presented as a potential diversification opportunity for manufacturers looking to build resilience and access new revenue streams. Discussion at Advanced Manufacturing Diversification Programme: Building Sovereign Capability – supporting National Endeavours highlighted a growing desire from government and major defence contractors to bring more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into defence supply chains as investment increases across the sector.
One of the strongest themes to emerge was that many automotive businesses may already possess the capabilities needed to enter the defence market. Advanced manufacturing expertise, robust quality systems, supply chain management, traceability, engineering excellence and experience operating in highly regulated environments are all strengths commonly found within the automotive sector and increasingly valued within defence.
The overlap between the two sectors is also growing. Areas such as advanced manufacturing, AI, autonomy, software, digital engineering and next-generation technologies are becoming increasingly important as defence organisations modernise capabilities and strengthen supply chains. At the same time, government and industry are placing greater emphasis on sovereign capability, resilience and strengthening the UK's manufacturing base.
Diversification into defence is not, however, a quick fix. Businesses need to understand procurement routes, compliance requirements, sector-specific standards and how to engage with prime contractors and wider supply chains. Speakers throughout the webinar stressed that entering the sector is a long-term process that requires planning, investment and relationship building.
Nevertheless, the direction of travel is becoming clearer. Increased defence spending, a focus on UK supply chain resilience and efforts to encourage greater SME participation are creating new opportunities across the manufacturing landscape. The businesses best placed to benefit are likely to be those that start exploring those opportunities now, identifying where their existing capabilities align with defence requirements and taking practical steps to build knowledge and connections within the sector.
For automotive suppliers considering their future growth strategy, the key question may no longer be whether defence presents an opportunity, but whether they are closer to being defence-ready than they realise. If you're considering diversification into defence and would like to understand the opportunities for your business, speak to Tom Cox or a member of our team.
