John Norman, PhD

John Norman is a Chambers-ranked patent litigator with over 20 years of experience representing multinational life sciences and technology companies in high-stakes intellectual property disputes.
With a PhD in Biochemistry, he brings deep scientific insight to complex, multi-patent litigation involving small molecules, vaccines, and biologics. He has led several landmark small molecule and biologics cases under Canada’s Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations.
John regularly appears before the Federal Court of Canada, Federal Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court of Canada.
When not litigating complex patent disputes, John works with his pharmaceutical clients to help them build novel and robust business strategies that will withstand multi-pronged attacks by sophisticated challengers. He also advises on regulatory exclusivity matters such as patent listing, regulatory data protection, certificates of supplementary protection.
In addition to his client work, John is co-head of the firm’s Switzerland country desk where he fosters Canada-Swiss collaboration in the life science and technology sectors.
John is an active member of the Canadian and international legal community. He frequently speaks and writes about pharmaceutical and technology patent litigation strategies. He also served on the Board of Directors of BIOTECanada from 2013-2022.
