Kushal Shah is a lawyer and patent agent in the Intellectual Property Group of Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office.
Kushal works alongside patent agents in the life sciences group, and assists them with drafting and prosecuting applications in the areas of biotechnology, genetics, microbiology, pharmaceutical formulations, clean technology, diagnostics, and medical devices.
As an internationally trained patent agent and lawyer, Kushal has experience working with startups, universities, and multinational organizations. He has advised on obtaining patent protection related to various technologies such as cellular therapeutics, genetic engineering, pharmaceutics, agrochemicals, biomedical devices, artificial intelligence, mechanical devices, and software engineering in numerous jurisdictions, including the United States, Europe, China, the Middle East, and India.
Kushal’s past work also includes tailored IP solutions and tactical advice on infringement, litigation, licensing, patentability and freedom to operate opinions, commercial transactions, franchising, and valuation matters.
In addition to a LLB from the University of Mumbai, Kushal also holds a MSc in Biotechnology. He has delivered numerous lectures and seminars on intellectual property, with special emphasis on patent drafting, research, and analysis.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Kushal worked as a patent agent in training at another Canada-based global law firm.
When not at work, Kushal enjoys riding his bike across Ottawa’s picturesque trails or experimenting with his botanical skills in his garden.
