Maya Stano is a Vancouver-based partner whose practice focuses on environmental, Indigenous, natural resource and construction law.
As a trusted legal advisor, Maya helps her clients take their projects from concept to completion with timely advice at all stages of the project lifecycle. From early planning and tenure applications through construction and operations, or final closure, decommissioning and reclamation, Maya provides straightforward advice to protect and successfully advance her client’s interests.
Maya represents both companies and Indigenous Nations in relation to a wide range of projects, including those in the mining, forestry, energy, oil and gas, hydro and nuclear sectors. Maya's services cover due diligence matters, permitting, land rights—such as leases, land access and tenure agreements—and regulatory compliance.
Through her Indigenous law practice, Maya regularly advises on Aboriginal title and rights matters and a wide range of governance-related matters, including drafting of laws and bylaws, managing land use and rights on reserve lands, and drafting and implementing land codes. Additionally, Maya assists in negotiating treaties and reconciliation agreements between Indigenous Nations and Crown governments, as well as negotiating precedent setting agreements between Indigenous Nations and proponents that help advance recognition of Indigenous title and rights, and comprehensive reconciliation.
Maya’s experience in environmental law includes strategic regulatory advice and representation on matters such as environmental impact assessments, carbon credit regime, natural resource development, major infrastructure projects, regulatory compliance and ESG.
Prior to practising law, Maya worked as a geological engineer on resource projects both domestically and abroad. Maya’s on-the-ground experience provides her a deeper understanding of industry practices, allowing her to deliver practical advice that her clients can effectively implement.
Maya studied law at the University of British Columbia, graduating with a specialization in environmental and natural resource law. After graduation, she clerked at the Federal Court of Canada and completed an LLM at the University of Ottawa. Maya has since been frequently recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada, Chambers Canada and Lexpert.
