Bio

As a principal associate in the tax team, Michael Sweeney has a breadth of experience advising clients on various types of direct and indirect taxes, including VAT, stamp taxes and other commercial and employment related taxes.

He has advised on many of the firm's corporate and real estate transactions, providing advisory support and assistance with tax structuring and drafting as well as managing post-transaction tax considerations and relevant communications to HMRC.

Expérience

Acting on the acquisition of a large property portfolio by a leading global asset investment company providing VAT and capital allowances advice and drafting;
Carrying out many stamp duty relief applications for clients following inter-group re-structuring providing them with large savings on stamp taxes;
Advising on the VAT, capital allowances and construction industry scheme considerations to both landlords and tenants in respect of capital contributions on the granting/taking of a lease;
Drafting tax covenant and warranty protection on several corporate acquisitions, including the acquisition of a property SPV by a large property investment fund and the acquisition of a well-known brewery chain;
Providing SDLT advice in respect of the acquisition of freehold or leasehold properties and other property transactions;
Drafting and negotiating the VAT provisions in agreements to transfer property as a going concern;
Advising on the PAYE and national insurance contributions implications of employee's termination packages;
