Steven Baum, a widely respected Canadian tax lawyer, has joined Gowling WLG as partner. Based in the firm’s Toronto office, he will work closely with members of Gowling WLG’s Tax Group to provide strategic advice to the firm’s clients across a range of sectors, with an emphasis on financial institutions.

A former partner at both a major Canadian law firm and a law firm affiliated with a large international accounting firm, Baum has advised foreign and domestic banks, insurance companies and securities dealers on complex income taxation matters for more than 25 years. He also has unique experience assisting clients from various industries with financing and capital market activities, corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions and derivative transactions.

“Over the course of his career, Steven has built an impressive practice and proven himself a forward-thinking leader in the field of tax law,” said Peter Lukasiewicz, CEO of Gowling WLG Canada. “With his specialized expertise in the financial services sector and ability to foster strong relationships with financial institutions, Steven will be an important addition to our tax team and a significant resource for our clients.”

Outside of his law practice, Baum frequently contributes to several leading tax publications, including Canadian Tax Journal, International Tax Planning and Corporate Finance. He has also served as both a taxation instructor at the Ontario Bar Admission Course and, since 2002, an adjunct professor and guest lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School.

“With its reputation for superior client service and sector-driven approach to legal work, Gowling WLG is the ideal place for me to continue my practice,” said Baum. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to deliver tailored, innovative tax solutions to the firm’s clients.”
