International law firm Gowling WLG's real estate team has advised Thomas White Oxford Limited ("TWO"), the development company owned by St John's College, Oxford, on the selection of a development partner for the first phase of new homes at Oxford North, the new global life sciences district.

TWO has selected Hill Group as the development partner to deliver the first phase of new homes on 8.64 acres of land at Canalside, both market and affordable, for the new Oxford North district in line with the masterplan, together with related infrastructure. Once finalised, the development will have 480 new homes and house circa 1500 people.

TWO was recently granted planning permission from Oxford City Council for outline consent for the overall 64-acre masterplan. The masterplan includes a wider development to create a life sciences district in the Oxford area which will include creating new laboratories and workspaces for biomedical science, new homes, public parks and neighbourhood shops and restaurants, with the goal of attracting and retaining global science research talent and to boost the local and national economy.

The Gowling WLG team comprised of real estate partners Nisha Jassal and Ashley Mitchell.

Nisha Jassal, lead partner for TWO, said: "It is a pleasure to work as part of the TWO team to bring our real estate expertise to bear in supporting TWO's vision to create a new life sciences district at Oxford North. The past year has highlighted the importance of investment in the wider life sciences industry and securing the first phase of this development is an important milestone for Oxford North. We look forward to continuing to work with the TWO team to bring the project to full fruition."

Ashley Mitchell, who led on the residential transaction with Hill Group, said: "This was a complex transaction which required close collaboration between the respective teams to conclude the documentation so quickly following grant of planning of planning permission. This bodes well for the future success of the wider Oxford North scheme and we are proud to act for TWO and play a part in realising their vision."
