Gowling WLG partner Jessica Boily appointed to board of directors of the Ontario Waste Management Association

The Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA), the province's largest environmental services association representing the waste management and recycling sector, recently named Gowling WLG partner Jessica Boily to its board of directors. Her appointment began on June 22.

Through a variety of research and consultation initiatives, the OWMA is committed to increasing recycling, addressing climate change, and fostering investment and innovation in Ontario's waste management sector. Its membership base is comprised of more than 250 public and private companies and organizations, which manage the vast majority of the province's waste and recycling.

Based in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, Jessica is an environmental lawyer known for helping clients engage with regulators on a variety of complex matters. Among other areas, her work is focused on contaminated sites, director and officer liability, environmental approvals and permits, chemical substances, export and import of environmentally regulated material, and the transportation of dangerous goods.

She also defends companies and individuals in federal, provincial, and municipal enforcement matters, and acts for clients involved in environmental assessment and approval hearings.

"The OWMA provides such a strong voice for organizations in the waste and resource recovery sector," says Jessica. "I've had a chance to work with clients in this space for many years, learning the challenges and issues affecting the industry as a whole, and I'm excited to play a part in advocating for the sector going forward."

For Adam Chamberlain, leader of the firm's Climate Change & Environmental Law Group, having Jessica on the OWMA board speaks volumes about Gowling WLG's environmental law practice.

"The OWMA is a major player in the province's waste management and resource recovery sector, and I know they will benefit tremendously from having Jessica on their board," offers Adam. "Jessica truly has diverse experience in this field, and has worked closely with the OWMA and its member organizations for a number of years. It's a great fit."

In addition to her day-to-day work and board duties with the OWMA, Jessica is the incoming chair of the Ontario Bar Association Environmental Law Section Executive, and is involved with the Ontario Environmental Industry Association. She enjoys teaching and mentoring law students and lawyers, and has lectured for the Osgoode Hall Law School Environmental Law Course in the past.
