Anthony Dearden
Anthony Dearden is a Canadian patent agent and European patent attorney practising out of Gowling WLG's Vancouver office. A member of the firm's Intellectual Property Group, his work focuses primarily on the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for clients in the tech sector. Anthony's technical background is in physics, allowing him to deal with patents relating to a wide range of technologies and across a variety of industries. He has particular experience in preparing patents relating to software and computer-implemented inventions, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as patents relating to mechanical, electrical, and optical systems.
Anthony brings over 15 years of experience to his practice, and works with his clients on all aspects of patents, including conducting and advising on prior art, landscape, and freedom-to-operate searches, advising on validity and infringement risks, as well as conducting due diligence of patent portfolios. Working closely with a network of foreign associates, he ensures that his clients are able to procure intellectual property rights at the global level. In addition to patents, Anthony advises on related intellectual property matters, and regularly prepares and obtains industrial design registrations for his clients, both in Canada and abroad.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Anthony spent over eight years in the United Kingdom where he worked for two reputable European IP boutique firms. During this time, Anthony gained in-depth experience of the UK and European patent systems, now allowing him to better guide his North American clients in cost-effectively obtaining European patent rights.
Anthony's clients range from individuals and start-ups to large multinationals with far-reaching patent filing programmes. He particularly enjoys working with early-stage companies that are newly venturing into patents and for whom IP is often one of their most crucial business assets.
Outside of his work, Anthony is a keen outdoor enthusiast and can often be found climbing up mountains and skiing down them.
