Catherine Phillips-Smith

Catherine Phillips-Smith is an associate lawyer in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, and a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Group.

Catherine previously served as a law clerk to the Honourable Justice Donald J. Rennie of the Federal Court of Appeal. While in that role, Catherine provided assistance with a variety of intellectual property cases, including patent, trademark, and copyright cases. She also gained extensive experience in administrative law, assisting with judicial review proceedings from decisions of a wide variety of federal boards and tribunals.

Catherine earned her JD from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, where she completed the specialized area of concentration in Law and Technology.

Prior to attending law school, Catherine completed a MASc in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto. Her graduate studies focused on aerosol research in and around the oil sands region of Alberta, and culminated with a peer-reviewed publication in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

Catherine also obtained an honours BASc in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from the University of Toronto, and received a Summer Student Fellowship at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The latter is the world's leading independent, non-profit organization dedicated to ocean research, exploration, and education.
