Jane B.H. Steinberg

Jane Steinberg is one of Canada's leading lawyers in intellectual property law. An Ottawa-based Gowling WLG partner with 35 years' experience, she provides clients with strategic advice in contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters, with a particular focus on trademarks and domain names. Her expertise encompasses litigation, prosecution and mediation.

Jane appears before the Federal Court of Canada, provincial courts and the Trademarks Opposition Board. She has extensive experience in negotiating licenses and other agreements, conducting intellectual property audits and providing freedom to operate and validity opinions, as well as providing strategic advice on intellectual property portfolios and anti-counterfeiting. She is also on the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center's List of mediators and arbitrators and on the INTA Panel of Neutrals.

Since joining the firm in 1980, Jane has held numerous leadership roles within the firm, including serving as national firm managing partner - external, Intellectual Property Department head in Ottawa, and national leader of the Life Sciences Group. She also served on the national executive committee for many years, and chaired the firm's National Taskforce on Women.

Jane's focus on delivering timely, strategic advice to her clients has earned her high ratings by major legal directories.

Jane is one of the two editors of the two volume, loose-leaf publication, "Life Sciences Law in Canada". First published in 2006, this text is updated twice a year and is the leading life sciences text in Canada. Jane is also one of the primary authors of "A Practical Guide to IP Issues in the Pharmaceutical Industry", covering laws in Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, and published in 2007 by the European Intellectual Property Reporter.
