Joanna Rhodes

Joanna advises on a variety of corporate and commercial disputes, and is currently working on a range of matters encompassing insolvency litigation, fraud and asset tracing and general commercial litigation. Many of the disputes Joanna has worked on have an international aspect to them, which involves working both with Gowling WLG's international offices, as well as directly with clients around the world.

Joanna has experience of advising a range of clients including insolvency practitioners, foreign law firms, individuals, financial institutions, corporates and company directors.

Experience includes:

  • Advising the trustees in bankruptcy in relation to a bankrupt whose affairs are extremely complex and require in depth analysis and investigation. The matter includes issues arising in the UK, Greece and Jersey and has involved numerous court applications on a range of issues including access to documents and privilege.
  • Advising several Brazilian liquidators on fraud investigation and asset recovery projects relating to corporate asset-stripping and dissipation, with values in excess of £100m.
  • Advising the liquidator of a luxury goods brand in relation to a complex high value liquidation. This has involved providing advice on a number of issues including investigations, potential court applications and the estate's claims generally, and has involved several of the firm's offices around the world.
  • Acting for the petitioning creditors in respect of a foreign national whose bankruptcy was based on overseas costs orders of around £2 million. The matter has, to date, involved a number of issues including complex trust structures and the interaction between foreign insolvency law and that of England and Wales.
