John G. Leckie

John Leckie is a partner in Gowling WLG's Vancouver office, practising primarily in the areas of advertising and trademark law.

John's clients include major advertisers and advertising agencies, as well as several British Columbia Crown corporations. His advertising and promotions law practice involves giving advice on:

  • Legislation relating to false and misleading advertising and deceptive marketing
  • Comparative advertising
  • Promotional contests
  • Social media
  • Personality, publicity and privacy rights
  • Contractual matters relating to advertising

John also has a significant trademark practice, which involves:

  • Managing clients' trademark portfolios, in Canada and around the world, and giving strategic advice on brand protection
  • Conducting searches and giving opinions on the availability of trademarks
  • Filing and prosecuting Canadian trademark applications
  • Handling trademark opposition proceedings

John strives to provide advice which is practical and useful, and takes a straightforward, "plain language" approach to explaining the law to clients.

Before going to law school, John worked in the advertising agency business in Vancouver, first as a media estimator and then as an account executive. He joined the firm in 1995 after four years with another national Canadian law firm.

John is continually recognized by Lexpert and has been ranked among Canada's leading advertising & marketing lawyers by The Best Lawyers in Canada since 2006, and World Trademark Review (WTR) 1000 2018.
