Michael Bordin

Michael Bordin is a partner in Gowling WLG's Hamilton office and is the leader of the office's Advocacy Department and a member of its senior management team.

A certified specialist in civil litigation, Michael has established a reputation for his immediate grasp of complex facts and the problems his clients face, as well as his ability to provide strategic, no-nonsense advice aimed at a timely and cost-effective resolution.

Michael combines strong communication, presentation, problem solving and relational skills, with sound judgment and analysis to solve his clients' problems and advocate on their behalf. He represents institutional clients such as insurers and municipalities as well as businesses individual clients in a wide variety of disputes, including contract disputes, professional negligence claims, shareholder disputes, oppression remedy claims, partnership disputes, estate disputes and other tort claims.

Settlement of disputes on commercially reasonable terms is always the goal - but sometimes a trial is the only route to resolution. Excellence in trial and appellate advocacy are essential to solving clients' problems. Michael has conducted trials in a wide variety of cases including product liability, construction, professional negligence, breach of contract, partnership disputes and tort claims.

Michael has argued complex motions and applications including injunctions and judicial review. He has acted as counsel before administrative tribunals and inquests.

Michael has argued appeals before the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Michael served as president of the Hamilton Law Association in 2016-2017. He is also a frequent presenter at continuing professional development programs on a wide range of advocacy-related subjects.

  • Successfully defending a manufacturing corporation against a claim for damages for product produced in China on the basis that the claim was an abuse of process.
  • Obtaining an injunction on behalf of a municipality enjoining protestors from obstructing the development of a corporate/industrial business park.
  • Successfully representing a municipality in defending against a claim for adverse possession.
  • Successfully representing a partner of a real-estate holding partnership in a dispute at trial and before the Court of Appeal.
