Natalia Thawe

Natalia Thawe is an associate lawyer and registered patent agent in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, working in the Intellectual Property (IP) Group. She practices primarily in the area of patent litigation, patent prosecution, and pharmaceutical regulatory law, and also has experience in industrial design and trademark litigation matters. She has technical experience in the areas of biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, molecular genetics and chemistry.

In 2022 and 2023, Natalia was named "Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch" by Best Lawyers™ in Canada. Natalia has worked with a variety of clients on IP matters, including patent infringement actions, patent impeachment actions, and proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Her litigation and enforcement experience spans industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and computer software. She has appeared before the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, and Patent Appeal Board.

She advises pharmaceutical clients on issues relating to the pricing of patented medicines and the listing of patents on Health Canada's Patent Register. She also advises clients on issues relating to pharmaceutical advertising and marketing, such as matters involving the Pharmaceutical Advertising Advisory Board and the IMC Code of Ethical Practices.

Natalia earned her JD degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. She also holds a master of science in molecular genetics from the University of Toronto, with a focus on virology and molecular biology. During her undergraduate studies, Natalia specialized in biochemistry. Prior to law school, she worked as a clinical research co-ordinator in the gastroenterology department at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. During law school, Natalia also previously volunteered and worked at the Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Liaison at Mount Sinai Hospital.
