Sean Giles

Sean Giles is a London-based associate in the EU, Trade & Competition team. Sean has experience across the team's practice areas, advising on merger control, cartel investigations and international trade law. He is a member of the firm's UK dawn raid response team.

Sean speaks French to an advanced level. Having spent six months on secondment at the firm's Guangzhou office, Sean also has a good knowledge of Mandarin. Sean is a member of Gowling WLG's China Desk.

Recently, Sean has been supporting Gowling WLG's Brexit Unit, which focuses on assisting businesses with operations in the UK and EU understand the impact of Brexit and formulate strategies to mitigate risks.

Competition Compliance, Investigations & Dawn Raids

  • Representing an energy supplier in relation to an Ofgem investigation into alleged breaches of the Chapter I prohibition of the Competition Act 1998.
  • Regularly advising a UK trade association on competition law compliance and attending board meetings and workshops.

Competition Litigation

  • Acting for Dixons Carphone in relation to multiple damages claims with respect to multi-lateral interchange fees in the Competition Appeal Tribunal and the High Court.
  • Acting for Thai Airways in its defence of a contribution claim brought before the High Court in relation to a European Commission cartel decision relating to air cargo.

Merger Control

  • Advising a major manufacturer of construction equipment on the acquisition of a competing business, securing clearance in the UK.

International Trade Law

  • Advising an exporter of military goods on the scope of its export licence.
