- Year of Call, Ontario (2017)
Alex Camenzind is a lawyer and registered Canadian patent agent in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office.
Alex’s practice is focused on all aspects of intellectual property protection and disputes, including a particular emphasis on patent infringement and validity proceedings under the Patent Act and Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Alex leverages his experience as trial counsel along with his patent agent training and scientific background to advance his clients’ interests in complex, high stakes litigation before the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, and Ontario Courts.
As a registered Canadian patent agent, Alex prosecutes patents and industrial designs on behalf of local, national, and international clients. His practice ranges from guiding start-ups and SMEs through their first intellectual property filing, to assisting sophisticated multinational clients with the management and oversight of their extensive intellectual property portfolios. In all cases, Alex is guided by his litigation experience, ensuring that his clients’ intellectual property will prove to be enforceable and defensible in the future. He similarly assists clients with internal reviews and audits of their intellectual property portfolio and protection strategy.
Alex also works with clients in the context of their regulatory obligations, including seeking reviews or appeals of negative regulatory decisions before the Federal Courts. This includes assisting clients with Health Canada’s regulatory obligations for pharmaceuticals and health products, such as patent listing and NOC linkage, pricing obligations for patented medicines, regulatory data protection, and regulatory approvals/rejections for medical, health, and consumer products. He also advises on issues surrounding the disclosure and confidentiality obligations relating to confidential information and trade secrets that must often be submitted to regulatory bodies.
Alex has represented clients across a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals (both small molecule and biologic products), biological and life sciences, chemical products, oil and gas, and health and lifestyle products. Alex’s work also spans a variety of technical subject areas, such as manufacturing processes and procedures, research techniques, technical software, and food processing.
Before joining Gowling WLG, Alex worked as a researcher with the University of Victoria's biochemistry department. His work focused on the development of innovative mass spectrometry techniques to analyze protein and peptide biomarkers in collaboration with researchers across Canada. Alex’s scientific and technical experience provides a solid foundation to understanding the issues and concerns of his clients regarding their intellectual property.
