Alyssa Flaherty-Spence is a senior associate in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, practising in the Indigenous Law and Canada North groups. She is also active in the firm’s Corporate Commercial Practice Group.
Her practice focuses on advising Indigenous clients across the country on various needs, including Indigenous community trusts, strategic policy initiatives, specific claims, including class actions such as the Indian Day Schools (McLean) Settlement and advising Indigenous clients on different Federal legislation. Alyssa also works with Indigenous clients on specific business-related matters including corporate commercial needs, mergers and acquisitions, NDAs, funding agreements, and negotiations.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Alyssa worked extensively with Indigenous organizations, particularly with matters within Inuit Nunangat. She previously worked for Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik Legal Services, the Government of Nunavut, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
Alyssa is a graduate of the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, with a specialization in Indigenous Law. She is also of Indigenous ancestry – Inuit and Cree – and calls Iqaluit, Nunavut and Tataskweyak Cree Nation her second homes. Alyssa was previously the president and chair of Inuuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Children, Youth and Families for 10 years and a member of the Community Liaison and Resources Committee (CLRC) for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. She is currently a Director of Uvagut TV and Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team. Alyssa is the co-chair of Gowling WLG’s WomenRise, a network that strengthens relationships, builds community, and accelerates the professional growth and business acumen of women across the Firm.
Alyssa is a mother of two children, Scottie and Noah and wife to Mike - whom she loves to spend valuable family time together.
