Vanessa Carroll

Vanessa Carroll is a partner in the Ottawa office of Gowling WLG, where she practises health law and professional liability. She acts as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) and previously represented physicians in a wide range of medico-legal matters, including negligence and professional discipline proceedings.

Vanessa has been consistently recognized by Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada as a leader in health care law (2024, 2025, 2026). She is an active member of the Executive of the Health Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association, where she currently serves as a member-at-large. She is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association.

In addition to her practice, Vanessa is a frequent contributor to publications on significant and emerging issues in health law, including the evolution of negligence cases and the legal implications of artificial intelligence in health care. Within the firm, she serves on the Momentum Committee, supporting decision-making and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and acts as a Respect in the Workplace advisor. She is also actively involved in the firm’s student recruitment initiatives and is committed to mentoring junior lawyers.
