Gowling WLG continues to strengthen its Corporate and Finance capability with appointment of Partner to lead the Financial Services Regulation team
Gowling WLG continues to build its Corporate and Finance capability with the appointment of Guy Stevenson as a Partner to lead the Financial Services Regulation team in London.
Guy joins the firm from Orrick with extensive experience advising clients across a broad range of regulatory and financial crime matters. He works with both established financial institutions and fast‑growing FinTech businesses, supporting them as they navigate the UK's complex regulatory landscape and bring new products and services to market.
Guy's practice spans key areas including payments, lending, cryptoassets, insurance distribution, investment activities and financial crime compliance. He regularly advises clients on whether new business models require regulatory authorisation and supports businesses as they launch, scale and evolve their UK operations.
A core part of Guy's practice focuses on financial crime and compliance. He advises on anti‑money laundering frameworks, reporting obligations, "failure to prevent" offences, anti‑corruption controls and financial sanctions. His advice is pragmatic and risk‑focused, helping clients implement proportionate and robust compliance programmes that align with regulatory expectations.
Guy also advises clients on the regulatory challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) in financial services, supporting organisations deploying AI solutions to ensure compliance with FCA expectations and the wider UK regulatory framework.
The appointment follows a string of senior hires into the firm's Corporate Finance and Tax (CFT) group, including partner Georgios Chic in the firm's Derivatives and Structured Finance practice, Real Estate Finance Partner Madeleine Clark, Natural Resources Specialist Daniel Driscoll, and Principal Associate Duncan Scott, also into the Financial Services Regulation team.
Stuart Young, Head of Corporate, Finance and Tax at Gowling WLG, said:
"Guy's arrival is a significant addition to our Financial Services Regulation team and Financial Institutions and Services sector. His depth of regulatory expertise, particularly in retail financial services and financial crime, aligns closely with the issues our clients are grappling with today. As regulation continues to evolve at pace, Guy's practical, commercially focused advice will be invaluable to clients across the sector.
"This is also a significant step in building our corporate, finance and tax capability. As part of a long‑term growth strategy, we are investing to strengthen our UK and international platform. Financial Institutions and Services is a strategic growth priority, and Guy's appointment reflects our ambition and our commitment to investing in exceptional talent to deliver it."
Commenting on his appointment, Guy said:
"It is an excellent time to be joining Gowling WLG. The firm has a strong reputation for combining technical excellence with commercial insight, and I'm excited to work with colleagues across the business to support clients as they navigate regulatory complexity, manage risk and pursue growth."
Guy's appointment further enhances Gowling WLG's full‑service offering to financial institutions and services clients in the UK and internationally.
