In Quebec, the use of biometric technologies by businesses to monitor employee activities is growing, raising significant privacy concerns. The Commission on Access to Information (CAI) recently reported that many of these practices often violate privacy regulations. Therefore, the CAI is emphasizing that such data collection must be justified by necessity and be proportionate to its intended purpose, urging businesses to reconsider their approach to biometric monitoring in compliance with the law.

Antoine Guilmain, co-lead of Gowling WLG's Cyber Security and Data Protection Group, recently spoke to La Presse, expressing concerns that Quebec's biometrics policies are overly complex and restrictive compared to global standards.

"We have the feeling that biometrics is futuristic, but it's very common and we're seeing it more and more. I have the impression that there is a framework that is too strict or poorly adapted in the amendment to the Act respecting the legal framework for information technology [Bill 25]."
