Canada unveils ambitious nuclear strategy: Ahab Abdel-Aziz weighs in on BNN Bloomberg and Energi Media
Canada's newly released nuclear strategy is generating significant discussion across the energy sector, outlining a coordinated federal approach to supporting the deployment of nuclear power at home and abroad while advancing climate, economic and energy security objectives.
Speaking recently with BNN Bloomberg and Energi Media, Ahab Abdel-Aziz, Global Director of Nuclear Energy at Gowling WLG, discussed the strategy's significance for Canada's nuclear industry, highlighting its potential to strengthen domestic deployment, expand supply-chain capacity, support workforce development and position Canada as a global leader in nuclear exports.
In his interview with Energi Media, Abdel-Aziz emphasized that the strategy reflects a sophisticated understanding of both the opportunities and challenges associated with nuclear development.
"This is a serious piece of work. It's impressive. It's sophisticated. It is tuned to the risks that attend a nuclear project, the difficulties of launching a nuclear fleet, and proposes a federal role that doesn't shirk responsibility but doesn't pretend that the federal government has all the answers."
Throughout both interviews, Abdel-Aziz noted that Canada's unique strengths—including its uranium resources, established nuclear technology, experienced workforce and extensive supply chain—position the country to play a leading role in meeting growing global demand for clean, reliable energy.
