Justin McCarthy

Justin McCarthy is a senior associate in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office and a member of the Professional Liability Group. His practice focuses exclusively on defending medical professionals in civil litigation and regulatory proceedings, with particular strength in navigating complex medical and scientific evidence.

His experience includes representing clients at all levels of court in Ontario, such as trials, summary judgment motions, and appeals before the Divisional Court and Court of Appeal. Justin also regularly appears before key health and administrative tribunals, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (ICRC and Discipline Tribunal), the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, the Consent and Capacity Board, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and the Information and Privacy Commissioner. He frequently advises and acts as counsel for physicians at coroner’s inquests.

In addition to his practice, Justin is a contributing author to Emerging Issues in Health Litigation and Regulation (LexisNexis) and speaks regularly on civil litigation and health law topics. He is also active in student mentoring and recruitment at the firm and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association.

Justin earned his JD from Dalhousie University and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2018. He holds an MSc in microbiology and immunology from Dalhousie University and a BSc in biology with a focus on health sciences from Bishop’s University.
