Maureen Murphy is the leader of Gowling WLG’s Medical Defence – General Counsel Practice Group in Canada.
Based in the firm’s Ottawa office, Maureen’s practice focuses on health law, medical defence, and privacy law, including acting as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association. She has experience representing clients before the Federal Court, the Superior Court of Justice, and a range of administrative tribunals.
Maureen has a particular interest in information technology and privacy law issues affecting physicians. She is recognized as a privacy lawyer with a proactive and practical approach to privacy compliance, assisting clients with the development of privacy policies, responding to access requests, and managing data breaches.
Maureen is a co-instructor for the Osgoode Hall Law School LLM course on Information Technology and Privacy in Health Lawand is a frequent speaker on medical-legal issues arising from the use of information technology in the practice of medicine.
Active in her community, Maureen volunteers with Go Capital Artistic Swimming Club. She is a former member of the Carleton University Research Ethics Board and previously served for several years as a committee member of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
