With over 25 years of experience practising intellectual property law, Stéphane Caron provides strategic advice on contentious and non-contentious matters concerning copyright, technology, media and trademarks. He regularly advises on software, database and AI-related issues. His clients include entertainment companies, creators and publishers, software developers, and businesses in the manufacturing, services and energy sectors. His client base also extends to public sector and not-for-profit organizations, including copyright management organizations, government departments, crown corporations and professional associations.
A member of the Gowling WLG's Intellectual Property Litigation Group, Stéphane represents clients before the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Trademark Opposition Board, and has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada.
A former chair of the firm's Copyright National Practice Group, Stéphane has extensive experience in advising clients on copyright- and technology-related policy issues. Stéphane taught copyright law as an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa from 1998 to 2018 and continues to speak on developments in copyright, technology, media and trademark law.
Fluent in French and English, Stéphane advises and represents clients in both of Canada's official languages.
