Expropriation Law

Public Law - Expropriation (CA) - website - banner - image

Overview

Acting for both expropriated owners and expropriating authorities, Gowling WLG's national Expropriation Law Group applies a creative, practical approach to a range of challenges — from informal negotiations to arbitration proceedings before administrative tribunals, including the Ontario Land Tribunal and the courts.

Members of our team are recognized nationally for their expertise, including by The Best Lawyers in Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.

Expropriated owners

Serving clients throughout Canada, our team helps guide expropriated owners — and other parties impacted by public infrastructure projects — through the expropriation process. Our private-sector clients include landowners, developers, corporations, homeowners and tenants. Whatever your objective, we help you overcome complex legal obstacles and achieve the best possible outcome.

Expropriating authorities

We act for a variety of public-sector clients in the acquisition of lands for public infrastructure projects (e.g., small municipal projects, light rail transit projects, hydro projects, highway expansions etc.) and advise on all aspects of expropriation law. Our services include the drafting of staff reports, by-laws, resolutions, notices, and pleadings; and the management and direction of all professional and expert services throughout the expropriation process.

Multidisciplinary experience

Operating in both official languages, our Expropriation Law Group works within one of Canada's largest and most respected full-service law firms. Members of our multidisciplinary team represent a diverse range of practice areas — including environmental law, land use planning, municipal law, Indigenous law, civil and commercial litigation, infrastructure, real estate and government relations.

Personal service, efficient results

Gowling WLG is guided by the belief that the best way to serve our clients is to be in tune with their world, aligned with their opportunity and ambitious for their success. That's why our team is always focused on your evolving needs and demands, helping you anticipate opportunities and obstacles well in advance.

We're collaborative, flexible, responsive and available — whenever and wherever you need us. We're also committed to conducting business in the most efficient, effective way possible, ensuring that you get the maximum value out of your legal spend.
