New U.S. tariff threat puts Canada-U.S. trade relationship to the test: Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M. speaks with BNN Bloomberg
As the United States threatens to impose new 50% tariffs on certain Canadian exports in response to Canada's retaliatory trade measures, renewed efforts to advance Canada-U.S. trade negotiations are taking on added urgency. The proposed tariffs would affect billions of dollars in cross-border trade, increasing pressure on businesses that depend on deeply integrated North American supply chains.
Speaking recently with BNN Bloomberg, Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M., partner at Gowling WLG and former leader of the firm's National Government Affairs Group, discussed the potential economic impact of the proposed tariffs while emphasizing the importance of a measured approach to negotiations. Jacques noted that while the uncertainty is creating significant challenges for exporters on both sides of the border, Canada's longstanding trade relationship with the United States remains strong and should provide a foundation for resolving the dispute through constructive dialogue.
"Our supply chains are suffering right now... I'm expecting that we can address this all sooner rather than later... We are the envy of the world in terms of the CUSMA agreement we have right now... we've got to find the bridge."
