Canada's new AI strategy puts adoption and trust in the spotlight: Naïm Antaki discusses the path forward on BNN Bloomberg
Canada's newly announced AI strategy aims to strengthen the country's position as a global leader in artificial intelligence by accelerating adoption, building public trust and supporting long-term economic growth. The plan includes significant investments in AI infrastructure, safety initiatives and workforce development, while seeking to translate Canada's research strengths into broader commercial success.
Speaking recently with BNN Bloomberg, Naïm Antaki, co-leader of Gowling WLG's Artificial Intelligence Group, noted that Canada's challenge is no longer developing AI technology, but ensuring businesses and workers have the confidence and knowledge needed to embrace it, moving from experimentation to adoption.
As part of the discussion, he highlighted the importance of investments in AI safety and literacy as critical components of Ottawa’s strategy to drive effective adoption.
"You can only do that with two things: one is trust and the other one is knowledge."
Against the backdrop of significant federal investment in AI compute, infrastructure, and business support, Naïm also highlighted that responsible AI adoption could play an important role in strengthening Canadian competitiveness.
"I think this is where we do have a real opportunity. [Our country’s] productivity challenge … can easily turn into a fantastic AI opportunity for Canada."
