Based in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, Alana Scotchmer is a partner and member of the Financial Services Regulation Group. Her practice is particularly focused on financial services regulation, banking, insurance and reinsurance, and anti-money laundering. Alana also advises on matters pertaining to payments in Canada.
Alana regularly advises Canadian and foreign financial institutions and service providers on Canadian regulatory, compliance and corporate governance matters. Her wide-ranging experience includes transactions involving regulated entities, commercial arrangements in regulated spaces and consumer issues. In addition, she has extensive experience assisting clients with financial institutions regulation, money services business regulation, FinTech and financial services intermediary licensing matters across Canada.
As a seasoned professional in the financial services industry, Alana has cultivated strong relationships with federal, provincial, and territorial regulators, as well as industry groups. This has given her a deep understanding of the financial regulatory landscape, allowing her to provide practical and reliable advice tailored to her clients' needs. Alana's guidance helps her clients navigate the complex regulatory landscape with confidence, and achieve their goals efficiently.
Outside of her work with clients, Alana writes and speaks regularly on the shifting Canadian regulatory landscape. Her insights are frequently sought by national and international media—including the Globe and Mail, Financial Post, and Reuters, among other tier-one publications—to whom she provides trusted context on important issues shaping the sector.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Alana acted as Canadian regulatory counsel to Royal Bank of Canada. She also holds a certificate in risk management from the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies.
