Image showing the international arbitration - review of 2024 report front coverThe last year has seen some big developments in international arbitration - both for Gowling WLG and in general.

In our second annual review of noteworthy international arbitration cases, we present a selection of prominent and interesting decisions from Gowling WLG's key arbitration jurisdictions - Canada, UK, France, Germany and - new for this year UAE.

The cases run the arbitral range - anti-suit injunctions, challenges to arbitrators, enforcement issues, and defining the borders between arbitration and other matters of legal policy. They span a number of industry sectors, including construction, financial services and Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). They are also inevitably played out against the global geopolitical backdrop, with the ongoing sanctions against Russia again providing a context for many of the arbitration applications making their way through various national courts in the past year.

During 2024, Gowling WLG continued to represent a wide range of clients in arbitrations under the auspices of various institutional rules, in ad hoc arbitrations, and pre and post arbitration matters in the national courts. We are delighted to have further strengthened our arbitration practice this year with the arrival of Partner Peter Anagnostou in Dubai, and the promotion to Partner of Thomas Yates in Ottawa. Each brings valuable experience in the field, and we look forward to a strong 2025 with many more developments to report.
