Gowling WLG is pleased to award the firm's inaugural $5,000 Life Sciences, Society & the Law Scholarship to Alycia Noë, a law student at McGill University Faculty of Law.

Earlier this year, the firm introduced the scholarship, which is designed to support the next generation of legal leaders in the life sciences sector. The scholarship is granted to the law student who writes the most distinguished paper, exploring the dynamic relationship between the life sciences and society from a legal perspective.

Gowling WLG's life sciences internal committee selected the winning paper based on a blind review process, which ensured that each submission was evaluated based solely on its merit, without any identifying information about the authors.

Alycia's winning paper focused on the transformative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the discourse surrounding intellectual property (IP) protections for pharmaceutical innovators.

Alycia's keen interest in embarking on a legal career within the life sciences stems from her strong drive to combine her legal education with scientific background, which includes a PhD in biology, to advance research and innovation in the field of science.

"We are thrilled to provide this scholarship to Alycia," said Christopher Van Barr, Gowling WLG partner and co-organizer of the Life Sciences, Society & the Law Scholarship. "Her passion for the intersection of life sciences and the law is truly inspiring, and we are honoured to support her on her journey through law school. We eagerly anticipate the remarkable accomplishments she will achieve as she enters the legal profession."

Gowling WLG would like to thank all the students who applied for this year's scholarship.

The application period for the 2024 scholarship will begin in February 2024.
