Thomas J. Timmins Addresses Alberta's Renewable Energy Challenges with the Globe and Mail and CBC
In recent interviews with CBC and the Globe and Mail, Thomas Timmins, leader of Gowling WLG’s Energy Group in Canada, discussed the future of renewable investment in Alberta following a wave of regulatory uncertainty.
In a Globe and Mail article, Timmins mentioned that investors, especially institutions such as pension funds, are now more cautious.
“Adding regulatory uncertainty will prompt them to seek other jurisdictions in which to invest their capital,” he said. “Any time you add uncertainty, any time you add risk, you’re changing the deal parameters. And these are long-term investors. They are also very large investments.”
Despite challenges, Timmins says he does not wish to overstate the negativity of the future of renewable energy investment in the province.
"When Alberta compares itself to hundreds of other jurisdictions around the world, it still comes off quite favourably," he said. "It's still a great place to invest. It still has incredible engineering talent, incredible financial markets, and incredible depth of capital."
