What's next for AI regulation in Canada? Antoine Guilmain comments in The Globe & Mail and Canadian Press
As discussions around artificial intelligence (AI) legislation evolve in Canada, the prorogation of Parliament has left the future of AI regulation uncertain. Speaking recently with The Globe & Mail and The Canadian Press, Antoine Guilmain, co-leader of Gowling WLG's Cyber Security & Data Protection Group, shared his perspective on the impact of AIDA's demise and its implications for the regulation of AI in Canada.
Guilmain noted that Canada now has an opportunity to reconsider its legislative approach, questioning whether an AI law of general application will be the best path forward in the end. He highlighted that existing laws, self-regulatory frameworks and industry bodies also play an important role in setting effective AI guardrails.
"It's a trend globally," Antoine said of legislation, in speaking with the Globe & Mail, "but maybe in five or 10 years, we'll see this was not the best course of action."
