John Peters

John Peters is a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, practising in the Advocacy Department and in particular, the Employment, Labour and Equalities Group. His practice focuses on providing specialized legal advice to employers in all sectors, with a specific emphasis on federal undertakings.
John has extensive experience guiding employers through the termination process and severance obligations. He is also well versed in how to conduct and conclude workplace investigations; his expertise includes drafting the underlying mutual respect policies and other related employment policies and protocols.
John also delivers legal training and awareness building sessions for professionals in all areas of labour and employment - for both private and public sector employers.
Prior to joining Gowling WLG, John was Principal Litigation Counsel at Export Development Canada (EDC) where he led the Litigation Management team, which delivers advice on all liability-related issues. John was also lead counsel for employment, access to information and privacy law matters. In this role, he advised EDC's human resources department, executive team, and board of directors on all litigation and potential litigation matters.
