Thomas Gertner is a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office and a member of the firm's Financial Institutions & Services Group. His practice focuses on a broad range of commercial matters, with an emphasis on insolvency law.
As part of his insolvency practice, Thomas regularly advises on complex restructurings, including consensual and contested proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, as well as informal workouts.
He is consistently called upon by Canadian banks and private lenders to assist with the enforcement and workout of troubled loans.
Thomas also maintains a robust practice advising lenders in reviewing, developing and implementing retail credit programs in Canada.
Thomas is a graduate of the joint JD/MBA program at Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business.
He has completed secondments in the legal department of the auto finance group of a Schedule I Bank and at a national captive finance company.
He has been ranked one of Canada's Best Lawyers since 2023.
