What's your background?
I am a commercial accountant, working closely with our real estate teams. I have had a varied career to date, which has seen me work in roles across several specialisms as well as industries, such as banking, hospitality, construction and even food manufacturing.
Why did you choose to work here?
Primarily because of the role on offer. It appealed to me as it encompassed all of my experiences to date and would allow me to demonstrate my strengths in a nurturing and challenging environment.
What was the recruitment process like?
I had a two-stage interview process. My initial interview was with our commercial directors as well as a member of the HR team. It was a traditional format, however I was pleased with the relaxed nature of the discussion. At a second stage interview, I met with the finance director and completed some technical tests.
What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?
The main factor is the focus it places on employee welfare and satisfaction. I was surprised by the variety of activities, including the social club, sports teams and training events. In addition, the business places a strong emphasis on supporting charities and is always open to new opportunities to support local and national efforts. I was further impressed by the flexibility of the business in allowing for agile working, and also secondment opportunities.
What's the most surprising thing you've learned about working here?
The most surprising thing is definitely The Loft (our in-house restaurant). A lifesaver at times!
What do you do outside work?
Reclaim and breathe new life into old furniture. I like having a project on the go which I can take my time over and indulge the creative side of my personality. My latest project involves turning an old canal lock into a coffee table, which is satisfying work despite the many splinters I have suffered!
