What's your background?
Based in our London office, I work across a full range of commercial disputes, with a particular focus on complex multi-jurisdictional cases, often with an offshore element. For example, I'm currently working on cases involving Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Jersey, Luxembourg, Russia and New York, as well as England.
I like the variety and challenge of working as a litigator. Each case has its own story, and you very quickly become your client's trusted adviser.
Why did you choose to work here?
The collegiate atmosphere and entrepreneurial spirit, plus the firm is forward thinking and ambitious. It attracts great people and excellent work.
What was the recruitment process like?
I joined the firm as a trainee solicitor. The recruitment process included a detailed application form, an interview with two partners, a group exercise and lunch. I had previously been working in another industry for over four years before switching to law, so initially I found it quite tough to be starting out all over again.
What makes Gowling WLG different to other firms?
I think the people are what make Gowling WLG different. The firm isn't hierarchical; everyone is encouraged to contribute. The firm strives to innovate and is creative in its approach to providing legal services. There is a sense of inclusion and a genuine open-door policy (especially since the offices are mainly open plan). On the client side, there are opportunities to get involved across the firm's different offices and services, to focus on sector or geographical expertise. There's an active social committee and the firm is committed to pro bono and volunteering initiatives.
What's the most surprising thing you've learned about working here?
The firm can trace its roots back to 1730. I think we used to have a copy of Napoleon's will, which we donated to the British Library.
What do you do outside work?
Travel, read and entertain my young son.
