Tax and Funds

Everyone has a contribution to make to our business, and is encouraged to make a positive difference to the team.

What the team does

The Tax & Funds team brings together four different disciplines in one team:

  • Tax
  • Private funds
  • Financial services
  • Company secretarial

It means that we get to work with all other teams, groups and sectors in the firm, and we have many and varied clients (domestically and internationally). We're led by friendly and approachable partners, across the Birmingham and London offices.

Our clients rely on us for our rigorous technical excellence and high quality. But, to provide a truly first-class service, we have to go further. We have to be able to apply our expertise in a commercial and business context, often in complex areas of the legal code, with pragmatism born of experience. So we work constantly on our service delivery. Our approach has been rewarded by recognition in the leading legal directories, and by clients returning to us time and time again as their trusted advisers.

We belong to various professional organisations and other groups, including the Chartered Institute of Taxation, the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. This provides us with access to the very best in academic thought and to government at the highest levels. It gives us the opportunity to influence the policies that impact our clients.

We're focused on what we do best, and we are passionate about what we do and how we do it.

What it's like to work with us

Our team is friendly and supportive, challenging and engaging. Everyone has a contribution to make to our business, and is encouraged to make a positive difference to the team. You will have the opportunity to grow into and expand your role, and develop the deep skills needed to succeed in your chosen discipline.

The quality of our work is high, and the range diverse; responsibility and "ownership" is encouraged and rewarded. We positively encourage personal learning and as a team have successfully embraced agile working; it's something we are genuinely committed to.

Junior members of the team are encouraged to gain as wide an experience as possible before focusing on particular areas of interest to them and to the team. As lawyers progress they are encouraged to increasingly take on their own matters but still with the benefit of support from other members of the team. There is ample senior support to ensure that work is appropriately supervised and that juniors are supported. Juniors can learn from the many years of experience in the team.

There are opportunities to sit external examinations to earn additional qualifications such as Chartered Tax Advisor and Chartered Secretary, with financial and pastoral support from the firm. The team is very sociable (of course), with regular (and well-attended) team events – from gin tasting to quad-bike trekking.
