In 2015, Gowling WLG developed and piloted a product designed by them and Cognify, the e-learning technology company, to aid HR managers in handling various human resource issues in the workplace.
SafeSpace is a suite of computer game-style learning programmes that utilise game theory, immersive comic-book graphics, and multiple choice answers that directly affect the outcome of the learning experience.
Safespace involves the gamification of solutions to key HR issues. In this way junior level managers can be equipped with the specific skills and knowledge to deal with situations such as disciplinary meetings and complaint handling in the most effective way possible and removing the burden of these types of meetings from senior managers.
This has enabled the production of modules on disciplinary hearings, managing grievances, investigations and performance management, with modules in diversity and absence management being developed.
SafeSpace also provides instant refresher modules, so a manager can quickly run through a relevant scenario prior to attending a meeting on that issue. Classroom teaching is not suitable for everyone, particularly for a large workforce spread across the country, so by converting the learning outcomes into a game-style web-based product, users can learn in virtual space and real time.
Safespace has provided an innovative new way of administering solutions to HR issues, resulting in greater outcomes and less expense than traditional training packages. The work has been highly recommended by users in the pilot phase and Gowling WLG hopes to roll out the service more widely soon.
Safespace was shortlisted in the Legal Innovation Awards 2015 Future of Legal Services Category and Best client-facing use of digital media at The Lawyer Business Leadership Awards 2015.
