Helping the elderly get online

16 August 2016

In 2015, Gowling WLG was tasked with providing investment and cross-border advice to Breezie, a software and services platform, to secure an investment significant enough to allow it to expand its offering into the US market, while at the same time expanding its UK operations.

Breezie is pioneering the use of modern touch screen devices, smart analytics and accessibility to radically simplify the online experience for older, digitally isolated users. Breezie approached Gowling WLG for advice on securing a strategic investment from the Ziegler Link Age Longevity Fund to further its aims in helping the elderly to get online.

Gowling WLG's Tech team advised Breezie and was made up of partner Andrew Lawton-Smith, senior associate Sam Brown and associate Mark Knight. They used their tech expertise and experience in advising on US inbound investments to secure a significant figure from Ziegler Link Age, a limited partnership that seeks to invest in companies who are improving the healthcare IT or healthcare services landscape for an ageing population in the United States.

The team's knowledge of the sector combined seamlessly with its experience in US sales and the US investment market to help negotiate the investment. Jeh Kazimi, founder and CEO of Breezie, said of the company's desire to assist the ageing population that the issues are global, "and therefore it was important for us to also raise financing from outside the UK and especially from a strategic fund like Ziegler Link Age. The Gowling WLG team showed great experience in executing cross-border deals and helped us close this investment in record time".

The investment has enabled Breezie to roll out pilot programmes to a number of US institutions and grow their UK client base to include Age UK and various senior living providers.

Getting the investment negotiated, agreed, signed and completed in record time has made all the difference for Breezie to expand its offering into the US and grow its client base in the UK. These twin aims will enable Breezie to further develop its business and ensure that more of the ageing population has easy access to the digital world.
