Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream merge to form Alectra Inc.

31 January 2017

On January 31, 2017, three leading Ontario electrical utilities (Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream) have merged to become Alectra Inc. This milestone was reached nearly two years after Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream announced their intention to merge and acquire Hydro One Brampton.

The merger creates one of the largest municipally-owned electricity utilities in Canada. Alectra will increase investments in innovation and technologies to provide better choices and value for its customers.

Gowling WLG advised PowerStream with a team consisting of Robert Hull, Edward Johnston, Leila Burden Nixon, Andrew Zed and articling student Sachin Seth and, separately, for the shareholders of PowerStream (the cities of Vaughan, Markham and Barrie), with a team led by Paul Harricks. Paul Carenza provided tax advice to both PowerStream and its shareholders.
