05 October 2015

David F.W. Cohen, a Gowlings partner and leading restructuring and insolvency lawyer, has been elected to serve as president of the global Turnaround Management Association (TMA), the world’s largest organization dedicated to turnaround management, corporate restructuring and distressed investing. His one-year term as president begins on Jan. 1, 2016.

Cohen is the second Canadian to serve as the global president of TMA, which has more than 9,000 members across 52 chapters worldwide, including 32 in North America.  Its members include turnaround practitioners, chief restructuring officers, lawyers, accountants, financial advisers, liquidators, executive recruiters and consultants, as well as academic, government and judicial employees.

“I am deeply honoured to have the opportunity to serve TMA in this leadership role,” said Cohen. “TMA is about more than troubled business turnaround — it is a community of professionals working to strengthen both national and global economies.”

“Our members save distressed businesses and jobs, assist management in navigating crises and help healthy companies avoid similar troubles. TMA’s members play an essential role in economies around the world. I look forward to working with our members and chapters to advance this work on a global basis.”

Upon completion of his term, Cohen will then serve as TMA’s global chair in 2017, and as its immediate past chair and chair of its leadership nominating committee in 2018.

A TMA member for over 15 years, Cohen has served in a variety of leadership roles, including as vice-president of membership and secretary on the Executive Board, and as a member of its Board of Trustees and International Board of Directors. He also chaired TMA’s 2015 Futures Taskforce, co-chaired its annual conference held in Toronto in 2014, and served as a director of its Toronto chapter board for six years.

Based in Gowlings’ Toronto office, Cohen is one of Canada’s leading restructuring and insolvency lawyers. He has been recognized for his expertise by Chambers Global, Chambers Canada and The Best Lawyers in Canada.

With senior practitioners located across the country, the Gowlings Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Insolvency Group is one of the largest of its kind in Canada. The firm’s lawyers have been involved in some of Canada’s most complex and high-profile domestic and global cases across a range of industries, with the depth and reach to assist clients wherever their needs arise.
