Gowling WLG's Brian Cohen elected as fellow of the ACTEC

05 December 2019

Toronto-based partner Brian Cohen was one of 42 international lawyers, and only two Canadians, named to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) in November.

ACTEC is an organization of peer-elected lawyers and law professors who are exceptionally skilled and experienced in the field of trust and estate law.

Cohen is co-leader of the firm's highly ranked Private Client Services Group in Canada. He assists clients in the areas of estate planning, trusts and personal taxation, with a focus on advising high-net-worth individuals on succession planning alternatives.

Cohen also advises donors, charitable organizations, public and private foundations and not-for-profit organizations on tax-related matters.

"It's an honour to be recognized alongside such a remarkable group of lawyers," said Cohen. "Being named a fellow of ACTEC is a great affirmation of the work we all do. I'm thrilled to be in such esteemed company, and of course, to be representing Gowling WLG."

Lawyers and law professors are elected as fellows based on their outstanding reputation, exceptional skill and substantial contributions to the field by lecturing, writing, teaching and participating in bar leadership or legislative activities. Fellows strive to improve and reform probate, trust and tax laws, procedures and professional responsibility.

"On behalf of ACTEC's Executive Committee, I am very pleased to congratulate and welcome this extraordinary and diverse new class of ACTEC Fellows from around the world," said ACTEC President John A. Terrill, II, in a press release.

"These 42 individuals were selected for their excellent professional reputation, for what they have already demonstrated by way of enhancing the field of trusts and estates and for what we know will be their ongoing contributions to the important work of the College," he added.

Cohen's appointment is the second for Gowling WLG in as many years. Partner Greg Shannon was accepted in 2018. Shannon, based in Calgary, works in the Capital Markets, M&A and Private Equity Groups, as well as the Tax and Private Client Services Groups.
