24 April 2019

Laura Gheorghiu, a partner in Gowling WLG's Montréal office and member of the firm's Tax Group, has been named a Rising Star by the Association of Québec Women in Finance (AFFQ). She received the recognition last Thursday at a gala ceremony in Montréal.

Gheorghiu focuses her law practice on cross-border investment structures, corporate reorganizations and domestic and multinational private equity funds. Her practice also encompasses employer payroll and pension obligations, as well as tax dispute resolution matters.

In recent years, Gheorghiu has also cultivated significant expertise in the application of taxation rules to the technology sector, particularly to providers of e-businesses and blockchain technology solutions.

"Given the high calibre of the other finalists, I am honoured to receive this award, which recognizes my sustained efforts to develop my expertise in tax law and to share my knowledge with others," she said. "It is also a recognition of the support that my Gowling WLG colleagues and mentors have given me over the years - and so in this way it is a collective win."

In 2018, the International Tax Review named Gheorghiu among its Women in Tax Leaders. She is a frequent writer and speaker at the Canadian Tax Foundation and the American Bar Association -Tax Division and currently she serves as an editor of Reuters' International Tax Planning Journal and Taxation of Executive Compensation and Retirement Journal and is a co-author of the Taxation Chapter of the "Business Guide to Environmental Law" book and of the "Taxation of Private Corporations and their Shareholders" book (CTF).

The AFFQ contributes to the career advancement of women in business, government and the media, and promotes their strategic role in the economic development of Québec at home and abroad.

With over 30 tax professionals in offices across Canada, Gowling WLG's Tax Group is recognized by Chambers Global and the International Tax Review as a leader in the areas of tax, transfer pricing, tax planning, dispute resolution and indirect tax. Learn more about Gowling WLG's Tax Group.
