Robert MacDonald receives lifetime achievement award from Managing Intellectual Property

27 March 2020

The Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) Americas Awards 2020 have honoured Robert MacDonald, co-leader of Gowling WLG's global Intellectual Property Group, with a lifetime achievement award. One of the world's foremost IP publications, MIP announced the award on March 26.

"I'm thrilled to receive this amazing honour from MIP," said MacDonald. "However, it is important to remember that it's the people around us who put us in a position to succeed. I'm privileged to be a part of the Gowling WLG IP team and it is simply one of the best. I can't imagine working anywhere else."

Based in Ottawa, MacDonald is an LSO Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property Law with nearly 40 years' experience protecting the world's top brands — in Canada and around the world. His practice encompasses the full trademark lifecycle, from prosecution and licensing through to enforcement.

Throughout his career, he has served as a strategic adviser to numerous multinationals and acted in a number of landmark trademark cases, including Adidas AG v. Globe International (2015); Hortilux Schreder v. Iwasaki Electric (2013); Apotex v. Canada (2010); Jose Cuervo v. Bacardi (2010); and Merrill Lynch v. Bank of Montreal (1996).

Widely regarded for his depth of expertise and significant contributions to IP practice, MacDonald is routinely listed among the top practitioners in his field by a number of prominent legal directories and publications, including Chambers Global, World Trademark Review and Legal 500 Canada.
