Gowling WLG finishes another strong year for M&A in Canada, the UK and Europe

23 January 2023

Refinitiv has published its year-end M&A legal advisory league tables for 2022[1]. Once again, Gowling WLG has posted strong deal numbers for Canada, the UK and Europe, especially when measured by volume of mid-market[2] transactions.

Refinitiv credited the firm with 207 global mid-market M&A transactions in 2022 for a #20 ranking among all law firms worldwide.

Broken down by region, these numbers include:

  1. 122 Canadian mid-market deals for a #3 ranking among law firms advising on Canadian deals, maintaining its ranking from the previous year;
  2. 69 UK mid-market deals for a #10 ranking among law firms advising on UK deals, up from a #12 ranking in 2021; and
  3. 96 European mid-market deals for a #23 ranking among law firms advising on European deals, up from a #30 ranking in 2021.

These results are notable in light of the fact that Refinitiv has reported a significant drop in overall volume of mid-market M&A deals for many key regions when compared to 2021: down 26 per cent worldwide, down 32 per cent for Canada, down 27 per cent for the UK and down 22 per cent for Europe.

Quarter after quarter, in all economic environments, Gowling WLG is regularly ranked among leading law firms for M&A transactions. Combining legal knowledge and business acumen, members of the firm's M&A practice serve as trusted advisors to a range of domestic and international clients across all major industry sectors.
