Gowling WLG launches BioEnergy Group as global energy sector continues push toward carbon neutrality

22 October 2021

Gowling WLG is pleased to announce the launch of the firm's global BioEnergy Group. This international team of lawyers stands at the forefront of the rapidly evolving field of energy technology, helping to facilitate projects, finance project development and construction, develop regulatory and contractual frameworks, and enable and protect technology innovators.

As part of the global move towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and a circular economy, bioenergy in the form of biogas, renewable natural gas (RNG), biomass, and biofuels offer solutions to both waste management and energy sector challenges.

"In this new world where we're trying to move far away from greenhouse emissions as quickly as possible, our BioEnergy team is keen and motivated to educate and advise our clients with respect to these promising and economic energy solutions," said Toronto-based associate Alex Sadvari, co-leader of the firm's BioEnergy Group in Canada.

The knowledge and experience of Gowling WLG's BioEnergy team will serve as a direct benefit to clients who are looking to understand both existing policy and the policy development process as the energy sector continues to evolve. Several members of the team have held elected office, served as senior government policy advisors or contributed directly to the development of energy policy, legislation and regulatory regimes.

"Our broader Energy team already has extensive experience working with both waste management companies and agriculture sector leaders; and clean fuel technologies like biogas and hydrogen are the future of the bioenergy industry," added Alison Gray, a Calgary-based partner and co-leader of the firm's BioEnergy Group in Canada.

On both sides of the Atlantic, Gowling WLG has garnered a strong reputation in the clean fuels sector. The firm advised one of Canada's largest food processing companies on complying with and maximizing its credits under the federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act and output-based pricing system in light of its historic biogas plant. The firm has also worked closely with both food product manufacturers and waste management sector leaders to develop permitting, financing, IP and contracting solutions for complex bioenergy infrastructure projects across Canada. In the UK, our team advised infrastructure investment firm Pioneer Point Partners, on a €60 million investment into Stream BioEnergy Limited to create Ireland's leading biogas company.

"Gowling WLG's multi-disciplinary Energy team has a market-leading reputation and operates seamlessly around the globe," said Thomas J. Timmins, leader of Gowling WLG's Energy Sector Group in Canada. "Our decision to focus on bioenergy at this time is no accident. It is an industry that is seeing tremendous growth, and our international BioEnergy team will continue to play a key role in helping to facilitate success for our clients."
